What Is CrossFit?

Learn From The Pros Our CrossFit Calgary SE gym

World Class Fitness in 100 Words:

"Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc., hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports."

Physical Skills

10 Physical Skills for optimum physical competence:

  1. Cardiovascular/Respiratory – Your body’s ability to utilize oxygen
  2. Stamina – Your body’s ability to utilize energy
  3. Strength – Your muscle’s ability to apply force
  4. Flexibility – Your range of motion at every joint
  5. Power – Your muscle’s ability to apply maximum force in minimum time
  6. Speed – Your ability to accomplish a movement in the least time possible
  7. Coordination – Your ability to perform various movement patterns in one fell swoop
  8. Agility – Your ability to move from one position to another quickly and seamlessly
  9. Balance – Your ability to control your center of gravity as a support system
  10. Accuracy – Your ability to control movement in any direction at various intensities

Fitness as measured by performance boils down to your ability to be ‘fit’ no matter the task. This means that you are able to pull tasks out of a hat and complete them to your skill level in relation to other individuals no matter how well you know them, have practiced them, or the order. This form of measurement leaves open the ability to handle any number of challenges because you are not stuck in routine.

Training: “Activity that improves performance through a measureable organic change in the body.” Working to improve your endurance, stamina, strength, and flexibility.

Practice: “Activity that improves performance through changes in the nervous system” Improvements in coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy

We train at our CrossFit Calgary SE gym in these domains by using the following equipment: climbing ropes, pull-up bars, kettle bells and barbells, jump ropes, rowers, and gymnastics rings…just to name our favorites.

Energy Systems

Focused on the three metabolic pathways that provide energy to the human body for metabolic conditioning, commonly known as ‘cardio’:

  1. Phos-phagen pathway: High powered activities less than 10 seconds
  2. Glycolytic pathway: Moderate powered activities up to several minutes
  3. Oxidative pathway: Lower powered activities more than several minutes

Training in each of these pathways develops and promotes ‘total fitness’. A lack of training in the oxidative pathway may be the most common mistakes in fitness training. The hierarchy of effort and concern are as follows:

  1. Diet: The molecular foundation of fitness and health
  2. Metabolic Conditioning: Builds aerobic, lactic acid, and phosphocreatine pathway capacity
  3. Gymnastics: Builds functionality in body control and range of motion
  4. Weightlifting/Throwing: Develops control and power using external objects
  5. Sport: Using skills mastered to achieve competitive success in ‘random’ atmosphere
